Text Box: HI EVERYONE!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the first of our monthly workshop series for 2010. Both workshops were a huge success and everyone there had a great time, including me! This weekend you can try out your new skills and dance moves at the Cityside 1920’s Dance Party. Our new venue is easy to find, has a great floor, and great music so get some friends together and come and join us!

Lastly, don’t forget about our “Bring a Man” Promotion which is a great way to introduce your friends to Cityside…
“If you bring a man along to class on a Monday or Tuesday night and he has not been to class before, you can do your class for only $10.
If you manage to bring two, we will give you your class for free!
(for a limited time only)

See you on the dance floor,

CITYSIDE DANCE PARTY
Come and try out our new venue!

It’s a new year and it’s time to try a great NEW VENUE for our dance parties, the Clouston Hall at St Cuthbert’s College, Epsom! This hall is wonderful, with a large dance floor that has just been re-done (so remember you heel protector’s ladies!) and plenty of room to dance and socialise. On top of this, the Clouston Hall is easy to find with direct access from the motorway using the Market Road off-ramp. Although there is no parking within the school grounds, there is plenty of parking on Market Road and the nearby streets.

So get a group together and join us for what promises to be a great first party for 2010!

KAPI-HUTT CEROC DANCE CHAMPS

Cityside Dance Studio is heading down with a team routine to support this great event and we would love you to join us in Lower Hutt to add your support and enjoy this great competition. If you are quick there is still time to get your tickets; there is even still time to register to compete!

Week Three Highlight: Judges - Just what are they looking for??
What factors does a judge consider when assessing a performance? Judging must have a basis on which to judge competitors within a limited amount of time. There can be numerous couples on the dance floor at one time. Adjudicators are individuals and each person has a different view in what they want to see and how they weigh these factors. One adjudicator may be especially interested in technique while another may be interested in poise or musicality and expression. No adjudicator will mark a competitor for any reason other than his or her honest evaluation of your performance.
So, what are the adjudicators looking for? An experienced judge can quickly assess these factors collectively:

Timing - If a couple is not dancing in time with the music, no amount of proficiency in any other aspect can overcome this. The music is boss.
Posture - One of the most important aspects. Good posture makes you look elegant and exude confidence. It improves balance and control.
Togetherness - The melding of two peoples’ body movements into one, so that leading and following appear effortless and the dancers are totally in synchronization with each other.
Musicality and Expression - The basic characterization of the dance to the particular music being played, interpretation and adherence to the musical phrasing and accents.
Presentation - Does the couple sell their dancing to the audience? Do they dance outwardly, with enthusiasm, exuding their joy of dancing and confidence in their performance? Or do they show strain or introversion?
Power - Energy is exciting to watch, but it must be controlled, not wild.
Shape - The combination of turn and sway to create a look or position.
Lead and Follow - Does the man lead with his whole body instead of just his arms? Does the lady follow effortlessly or does the man have to assist her?
Intangibles - How a couple "look" together, whether they "fit" emotionally, their neatness of appearance, costuming, the flow of their moves and basically whether they look like "dancers".
Ceroc Freestyle - Judges are looking for non-choreographed dancing. Obvious use of repeated sequences of moves (ie choreographed routines) in these events can result in lower marks.

We are very lucky to have some amazing people and dancers coming to Judge for us at the Champs from all over the country.

Full Champs details and information is available online at: www.cerocstars.co.nz/champs. You can download an entry form from there too, or grab one from the front desk at any of our classes. Main floor tickets have now completely sold out; Gallery tickets are still available for both competitors and spectators.

All entries must be received by the close off date of 5 March 2010.

SIMPLY CEROC WEEKEND
Jordan & Tatiana!

This year we are very excited that Jordan Frisbee and Tatiana Mollman, possibly the world’s best known partner dancers thanks to YouTube, (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3gXSJq_s2s&feature=related for an example of their dancing) are going to be coming along to our event to perform and teach workshops!

Jordan & Tatiana have been a successful partnership for nine years. They are 11-Time US Open Champions, 6-time NASDE Champions, and Multi-Grand National Champions, as well as dominating the Classic Division throughout the past 6 years. At the UCWDC World's event they were given the Star Award for the Couple with the Most Impact on Swing, and Jordan won Best Swing Choreographer. They have won Swing Couple of the Year for 5 years straight on the web site: www.usaswingnet.com - an amazing achievement for a dancing couple!
Jordan & Tatiana have won Fox TV's "30 Seconds to Fame," appeared twice on CBS TV's "Star Search," danced in the motion picture "The Polar Express", won "America's Best Dance Couple" on ABC TV's "Good Morning America," and had speaking roles and danced in the movie "Love 'N Dancing." They travel 47 out of 52 weekends per year, competing and teaching packed workshops all across the USA and Internationally.

We have been negotiating with them for over a year and have finally received confirmation that they will be coming in October. They will be teaching three 2-hour workshops for us as part of our normal workshop program. The workshops will be aimed at good intermediate and advanced dancers and include Musicology, Jordan and Tatiana’s Favourite Moves and Modern Jive Meets West Coast Swing. All the workshops will be based on modern jive  footwork and will incorporate the smoothness and flair of the WCS style that will take your Ceroc dancing to a whole new level.

We also have Ceroc Signature Moves and Latin style workshops taught by Vanroe and Naomi from Ceroc Counties, Hot n Spicy and Styling workshops from Adam from Ceroc Wellington and a Lifts workshop from Catherine and Royce from Ceroc Kapi-Hutt. All these teachers are extremely experienced, have won multiple competitions and are very popular all over NZ. Beginner dancers are catered for with a Beginners Pizzazz workshop taught by Rachael from Ceroc Wellington. Together with Jordan & Tatiana, this is the strongest line up of renowned teachers that have ever come together at the Simply Ceroc Weekend and possibly at any weekend event ever in NZ.

Jordan and Tatiana will also be amazing us with two performances – one at the Showcase Spectacular on Saturday night and one at the Grand Ball on Sunday night. We have moved to a new venue for the Showcase and the Friday night dance which will cope with the increased numbers that we expect will be attending this year due to Jordan and Tatiana’s appearance.

We’ve already had a lot of interest from around NZ and Australia from dancers that want to come along to the Weekend this year so we wanted to let the Ceroc NZ community know about this exciting opportunity so that you can plan to be here. We are currently putting together the rest of the program and bookings will open in March this year to cope with the level of interest. The weekend will be held over Labour Weekend – 22-25 October 2010.

In the meantime please do contact us if you would like to know more details;

THIS WEEKS CEROC TIP
“Practice”

“The best way to improve is practice. And class nights with freestyle are an ideal place for it. Don’t be afraid to practice things you are not yet perfect at, and actively encourage others who are trying to improve. If you laugh at, mock or gossip about someone who is still trying to work something out you can destroy their confidence to try and ruin the wonderful atmosphere of support and trust that usually exists at Ceroc”

A big Thank You to Ceroc Christchurch for this positive tip!
.

FEEDBACK WANTED!
We are always looking at ways to make things better and to provide you with the classes and the atmosphere that you want to be a part of, so if there is anything you don’t like or if there is anything you want more of, we would love to know!

There are many ways that you can provide us with feedback! You can approach Lisa or myself and have a chat, and you can do the same with all of our teachers, alternatively you can send us an e-mail or even drop a note in the suggestions box at the front desk.
